In March of 2009, a young man made a long journey "over the pond" to participate in the prestigious Dr Pepper Dallas Cup Youth International Soccer Tournament with his team. His goal was to represent his club, SC Cambuur a professional Dutch soccer club headed by Mr. Alex Pama, the first Dutch-American General Manager within European soccer leagues. Alex and Tournament Manager Randy Jones have been good friends for many years. Under Alex’s direction, the club’s management quickly established a good relationship with the tournament staff. Thus, the club is making it an annual team trip so its young players can compete against some of the world’s other top clubs, enjoy magnificent Texas hospitality and participate in the wonderful “Dallas Cup Experience”.

Bjorn de Hoop was lucky to make a Dallas Cup trip with SC Cambuur while playing in the U19 age group for the second year in a row. Among numerous unforgettable cultural, educational and personal adventures which set the Dallas Cup experience apart from any other competition in North America, the tournament itself is also a college coaches and professional scouts recruiting heaven. Bjorn’s excellent performance, effort and attitude caught eyes of some American college coaches this time. After the round play, several colleges expressed serious interests in the "#5". At first, Bjorn was not aware of the magnitude of the situation. However, American parents probably understand and most likely it is one of their many dreams to see their kids play a sport at a Division I college level on an athletic scholarship. To Bjorn, because of inadequate knowledge of the American student/athletics concept, it did not mean much at first. However, upon returning to the Netherlands and further discussions with his family and friends he realized that he could live the next four years in America, the land of opportunities, and still pursue his ultimate professional soccer goal. It was interesting for me to see from cultural soccer perspective how players would react when initially presented with an opportunity to even travel to Dallas and participate in the great event. Some of the first questions asked were based around the reward system for winning a tournament such as monetary prize and value of it, which in European tournament competition is not unusual. In Bjorn’s case, though his team hasn’t won finals of their competition, his individual effort was to be awarded in a way he has never imagined. Two weeks following his return to the Netherlands he went back to the US, only this time to make an official visit to St. John’s University, the college which offered him a great financial package. Thus, over the intense summer (and just to put it into a perspective, usually a foreign student aspiring to study in the US is to plan year and a half ahead of time to complete the process) he worked extremely hard to bridge the gap between the school he was attending at the time in the Netherlands, the St. John’s University and the NCAA Clearing House. Going back to a reward, it is a "ticket" to play for one of the top soccer programs in the country over the next few years.

He hopes to one day become a professional soccer player while completing his university education. The benefits of attending such an event are enormous for any player and it was the Dallas Cup that made it possible for Bjorn to play, study, and live in the Big Apple.

This “Dallas Cup Experience” is written by Sevy Sucurovic, delegation leader for SC Cambuur of the Netherlands.

(You can follow Bjorn de Hoop and his progress in the US by visiting St John’s athletics website http://redstormsports.cstv.com/ )

font-family: Verdana">The name of Nobel Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu, winner is synonymous with nothing but the good in the world today. His work in bringing together the people of South Africa following the end of Apartheid plus his efforts to assist the bringing together of all races, colors, and creeds in South Africa is known worldwide. In 1999 contact was made with Archbishop Tutu’s office and talks were commenced to bring a young multi-racial team from Cape Town to Dallas Cup. As always with such a project, it takes time to put all the parts in place but success was achieved in 2000 and the first South African team took advantage of the HomeStay Program and arrived in Dallas to enter the tournament. Thanks to Archbishop Tutu’s continued support, his team has played here every year since that date. The leader of the team, Basil Palanyandi, has also become a good friend of the Dallas Cup and each year we enjoy his reunion with so many Dallas soccer friends and of course the opportunity to welcome the new Cape Town team. Thank you Basil and of course Archbishop Tutu who assists us in making their team’s visit possible.

In 2005 a call from London regarding a BBC TV broadcast of the Simon Peres program in Israel to bring Israeli and Palestinian children together through education and sport started the Dallas Cup on one of its most memorable and emotional projects in the history of the Dallas Cup to date. Contact with the Simon Peres Peace Center was made through the soccer federations of both England and Israel and following months of planning an Under 12 Peace Team consisting of nine Israeli boys and nine Palestinian boys as well as two Israeli coaches, two Palestinian coaches and two Peace Center officials were invited to Dallas Cup XXV. A HomeStay Program with one Israeli boy and one Palestinian boy staying with one American U12 boy’s family brought about a truly marvelous week for those boys. For ten days there was no fear of a falling bomb, a rocket attack, or a shooting. There was just the opportunity to play soccer, to visit Texas places of entertainment, a Texas Rangers’ baseball game, a pool party, and a barbeque. To be young boys having fun together. Two nationalities, whose adults unfortunately have problems in living together but these boys were able to live together, play together, and compete on the soccer field for ten days without a care in the world. The Simon Peres Center and the Dallas Cup coming together to let these young U12 boys just be boys. In an interview on Dallas TV, a young Palestinian boy, when asked by the interviewer how was he getting on with his Israeli roommate replied “When I came, he was my enemy but now he is my friend.” That statement is one of the most memorable moments in the history of the thirty years of the Dallas Cup. This simple yet powerful statement is what the “DALLAS CUP EXPERIENCE” is all about.

For many years now the Dallas Cup Staff and I have “kidded” our Executive Director Gordon Jago (with “love” in our hearts I would add) that “long ago and far away” when he played professionally for Charlton Athletic FC in the English First Division the ball had laces, that it picked up two pounds of weight when played on a muddy pitch, that the Match Programs and other important documents were chiseled on stone tablets and television screens maxed out at 10 inches diagonally. Well, we all now have to admit we were wrong about the Match Program.

I recently heard from a long time mutual friend in England, Alan Bennett. For many years before retiring, Alan provided wonderful assistance and acted as a liaison between the Dallas Cup and the English Premier League Academy League. Alan sent me an email on 10 August and in it he tells me, “Arsenal were the first Club I supported - my dad took out two Season Tickets for seats in the Stand at Highbury the season after the war (World War II) at the princely cost of £5/15/6 each - Gordon will translate for you !!! But it works out at around $7.50 at today's rates or $23 at that $4 to the £1 rate of those days. Fortunately my mother rapidly lost interest so I took over the second ticket, and was a keen supporter until I went to Chelsea as Assistant Secretary in 1961. Now just to prove my Arsenal credentials, I'm attaching a scan of an Arsenal v Charlton First Division match programme from 20th April, 1957, with a certain "Jago" listed to play at No. 5 for Charlton. He also gets a write-up in the pen pictures (on the upper right side of the left hand page) of the Charlton players, which I hope you can read.
