Two Dallas Cup Alumni Start for England in Scottish Friendly

Wayne Rooney (DC ’99) and Tom Cleverly (DC ’03) started in England’s 3-2 victory over Scotland on August 14.

Two previous Dallas Cup participants, Wayne Rooney (DC ’99) and Tom Cleverly (DC ’03), started for the English National Side in their recent friendly vs. Scotland.   The game got off to a poor start for England when, in the 11th minute, goalkeeper Joe Hart was unable to handle a James Morrison strike giving Scotland an early 1-0 lead.  However, Cleverly, who plays his club ball for Manchester United, placed a perfect through ball to Theo Walcott who beat the Scottish ’keeper with a near post blast.  Just two minutes earlier, Cleverly had his own chance from Walcott but tripped with only the goalie to beat.

Just four minutes after halftime, Scotland pulled ahead for the second time with a strike from Vancouver Whitecap forward Kenny Miller.  But England was up for the challenge, and scored twice in the second half to come away with a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Appearing on the bench of England were two additional Dallas Cup alumni, Glen Johnson and Jermain Defoe.

England will now turn its attention to qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with their next match against Moldova on September 6, at Wembley Stadium.  They are currently in second place behind Montenegro, but with a game in hand.
