DALLAS, Texas (Friday, Feb. 22) – The Dr Pepper Dallas Cup, the oldest and most prestigious international youth soccer tournament in the United States, has announced two more additions to the 2019 Gordon Jago Super Group. Querétaro FC of Liga MX and South African side Ikapa Sporting FC will compete in the elite bracket this April at the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup’s 40th Anniversary Tournament.
The 2019 Dr Pepper Dallas Cup will mark Querétaro’s third Gordon Jago Super Group appearance in the past four years. Los Gallos Blancos have steadily become a force at the Dallas Cup, claiming three “Boot and Ball” trophies in the past two years (U14, U16, U17), but they are still seeking a breakthrough year in the elite bracket. Despite a strong showing in the 2018 Gordon Jago Super Group, Querétaro narrowly missed advancing out of the group stage of the tournament. The Liga MX side hopes to build upon this past spring’s appearance, and become the second consecutive Mexican side to win the prestigious Gordon Jago Super Group title (2018 - Tigres).
Also joining the 2019 Gordon Jago Super Group is Ikapa Sporting FC. Hailing from South Africa, Ikapa Sporting is the first African side to compete in the Super Group since 1999, when fellow South African side Jomo Cosmos participated. Ikapa Sporting, who has a strong emphasis on their youth development, hopes to become the first African side to win a Dallas Cup championship since 1985, when Nigeria’s Trebor Lions won the U19 title.
Querétaro FC and Ikapa Sporting FC join a Gordon Jago Super Group composed of several elite teams, including the academies of Premier League giants Arsenal and Liverpool, defending Super Group champion Tigres, 2018 Copa do Brasil champion Cruzeiro EC, and USSDA national champion New York City FC, among others. Dr Pepper Dallas Cup’s 40th anniversary tournament will be played April 14-21, 2019. Keep up to date with more news at www.dallascup.com and follow us on Twitter @dallascup.
